PRESENTATIONS
1. Michael Woods, Lake Sumter MPO - expansion of Round Lake Road will begin in 2024. Round Lake Road will be extended to SR 44 in 2026.
2. Mount Dora Fun Fact - In celebration of Women’s History Month, we honor Margaret Lewis, one of the town’s earliest civic leaders. Margaret came to Mount Dora with her parents from Michigan in 1899. Upon arrival she founded a local chapter of The King’s Daughters (a philanthropic organization) and then started a private kindergarten and then later a local Red Cross chapter. But her main contribution was the driving force to establish Mount Dora’s library in 1905, as a member of the Mount Dora Improvement Society and the guiding light of its Library Committee, later called the Mount Dora Woman’s Club, which supports our city to this day. She held the first fundraiser for the library – a tea – with the price of admission being at least one book of fiction! Under her direction the library grew from 150 volumes to about 3,500. She lobbied town council members and convinced Charles Edgerton to buy Education Hall for the library (across the street from our current City Hall). She also insisted the town hire a trained librarian and after 30 years of volunteer leadership, she stepped down in the 1930s. We salute Margaret’s dedication and vision for our city!
