Race Against Prime Time Film Screening
Sunday, February 16, 2020
‘Race Against Prime Time' is a one-hour 1985 documentary by Producer/Director David Shulman. This classic case study in media bias examines how the three network affiliates covered urban unrest in Miami's predominantly African American Liberty Hill neighborhood, following the 1980 acquittal of police officers for the killing of a local resident; how it framed the uprising as "riots," chose the community's "spokespersons" and focused on the inconvenience to white commuters. ‘Race Against Prime Time’ documents how local television newsmen anoint black community spokespersons, characterize whites as victims and blacks as rioters.
Discussion afterwards with Moderator Ozell Ward.
Refreshments served; no registration required.
This African-American History Month film screening and discussion is sponsored by the Mount Dora Library Association.
